Discover picturesque Ait Bougmez and lovely Berber villages as you hike through the famous M’Goun Valley

The High Atlas is perhaps the wildest part of the Atlas Mountains, dominated by the peak M’Goun at 4068 metres above sea level (ASL). With stunning views of verdant valleys, gorges, remote villages and mountain peaks, trekking is the perfect way to discover the traditional local architecture and rural way of life. A favorite destination is the picturesque Ait Bougmez Valley with its traditional mud brick houses clinging to the majestic mountainsides.

DAY2 : Tabant / Ait Said / Azib n’Ikkis
On the first full day of our trekking holiday, we’ll get up early and depart Marrakech by car and meet our guide and mules in Agouti. We then set off on an easy 3 – 4 hour hike to our campsite near the summer pastures of Azib n’Ikkis at 2250 metres. On the way we pass through the beautiful Berber villages of Ait Said and Arouss.

DAY3 : Azib n’Ikkis / Tarkeddid Refuge
We will have a short day’s trekking – about 4 to 5 hours – but quite steep, and involving the ascent of the Oumskig Pass at 2909 metres ASL. We’ll also traverse the very steep Aghouwri Pass (3400 metres ASL) which provides magnificent views of the surrounding area. We will then follow another steep, zigzag path down to the Tarkeddid Refuge where we can spend the night.

DAY4 : M’Goun Summit
After breakfast, we’ll make an early start on our 4 to 5 hour climb to the summit of M’Goun. The ascent is not technically difficult and the magnificent views, when we reach the top, make the effort worth while!

After treking to the summit, we’ll return by retracing our steps – a descent of about 3 hours.

DAY5 : Tarkeddid refuge / Oumsoud Pass / Oulilimt Valley / Ain Afla
Today is a varied day’s hike and it will lead us around the edge of the Arouss Gorge, down and along streams and rivers, and up to an ascent to the Oumsoud Pass at 2969metres ASL. We’ll stop for a picnic at the Oulilimt Valley in some delightful meadows with a water spring. After lunch we continue to follow the river for a further 3 hours trekking until we reach the Ain Aflafal Refuge.

DAY6 : Ain Aflafal / Ait Imi Pass / Tabant
Today we trek for about 5 or 6 hours, and return to the Ait Imi Pass at 2905 metres to Tabant. Initially this is easy walking, but as we approach the Ait Imi Pass and we start to climb, and there is a fairly steep ascent at the end. From here there are views down into the M’Goun Valley and on a clear day we can see the village of Tabant, our destination. The descent from Ait Imi Pass is steep and over loose scree, but after about 1 hour and 30 minutes we arrive in the village of Ait Imi which is only about half an hour from Tabant. Stop for n
